Coogan bests Correia by wide margin in Fall River mayoral preliminary election
Paul Coogan and Jasiel Correia placed first and second respectfully in a preliminary election that had a big turnout by Fall River standards.
In unofficial final results, Coogan garnered 8,273 (62%) of the votes while incumbent Mayor Jasiel Correia II came in with 2,777 (20%). Erica Scott-Pacheco gave Correia a challenge, but rounded out the three with 2,171 (16%).
Unofficially, a total of 13,221 Fall River residents voted in Tuesday’s election.
There were 8829 votes in the 2017 preliminary election and 13,937 in the recall election.
What may have been as surprising as the voter turnout was the gap between Coogan and Correia.
With the 24 indictments hanging over Mayor Correia’s head, a win by Correia in the recall election turned into a sizeable gap versus the winner Coogan in today’s preliminary election.
Correia and Coogan will square off in a November 5th general election that will also include races for City Council and School Committee.
