Bystander who came to aid of victims describes fatal crash scene that injured three others from Brockton
HOOKSETT, New Hampshire – On November 11, 2023, at approximately 5:18 p.m., the NHSP Troop B Barracks responded a rollover crash on I-93 southbound in the area of mile marker 26.8.
Upon arrival, it was determined that a 2008 Chevrolet Express van was traveling southbound when the vehicle cut across the median dividing I-293 southbound and I-93 southbound, lost control and rolled over coming to rest on the shoulder. Several occupants of the vehicle were ejected when the crash occurred.
The driver of the Chevrolet Express Van was identified as 38-year-old Hendry Matias Chuqui Pena if Brockton.
One of the passengers of the Chevrolet Express van succumbed to his injuries and was deceased at the scene of the crash. He was identified as 50-year-old Jose Evangelista Yanascual Cumbalaza of Brockton.
Three of the occupants were transported to the Eliot Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash.
At the request of the Troop B Barracks, the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation. The Hooksett Fire Department assisted on scene as well.
A man who stated he was a bystander who aided those on scene released a statement on social media.
“(We) were on or way to a date night Saturday evening when we witnessed the van roll 4 times in front of us. Ejecting 3 of the passengers. We pulled over and called 911 and I ran over to see if I could help in anyway. I and another passerby provided first aid to one of the individuals who was ejected and suffered really bad facial lacerations. Sadly, we couldn’t do anything for the individual who passed as he was deceased immediately. We stayed until help arrived and then provided our statements to the NHSP. To describe this accident as horrific would be an understatement but has really reminded me how fragile life is and to always hold your loved ones close. I have a large car friend circle and I just ask that you guys slow it down and be more careful when cruising around. This individual’s family lost someone this close to the holidays so keep his family in your thoughts.”
All aspects of the collision remain under investigation by authorities. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash are urged to contact Trooper First Class Francisco Vincente at Francisco.A.Vicente@dos.nh.gov.
