Bristol County woman killed, Bristol County man seriously injured in fiery crash on Route 495

A woman has died, and a man is fighting for his life after a fiery crash on Tuesday.

According to Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Massachusetts State Police Troopers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 495 southbound at mile marker 33.8 in Foxborough. The crash involved a 2018 Ford Escape, operated by a 24-year-old woman from Mansfield, and a 2012 Hyundai Tucson, operated by a 30-year-old man from North Easton.

The operators of both vehicles suffered serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The operator of the Ford later succumbed to her injuries.

Immediately after the crash, one vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, which were extinguished by Foxborough and Plainville Fire Departments. MassDOT responded to the scene in order to conduct an inspection of an overpass for damage that may have been caused from the vehicle fire.

The exact cause and circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the State Police-Foxboro Barracks, Troop H Detective Unit, State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County.

All lanes of Route 495 southbound were shut down in the crash area to accommodate the investigation, with traffic only getting by via the breakdown lane. All lanes were reopened at 9:30 p.m.
