Bristol County man with nearly 100 arraignments sentenced in wrong-way crash on Route 195 that seriously injured 6
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Attorney General Peter Neronha announced today that a Dighton, Massachusetts man has been sentenced in Providence County Superior Court to serve at the Adult Correctional Institutions for driving under the influence, resulting in a wrong way highway crash that seriously injured four and hospitalized six overall.
On Thursday, Superior Court Justice David Cruise sentenced 33-year-old Cary Guy to 17 years, with 10 years to serve at the ACI and seven years of probation, alcohol counseling and treatment, and a six-year loss of license upon release from the ACI. Prior to the sentencing, the defendant pled nolo contendere to four counts of driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, four counts of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and two counts of driving to endanger resulting in physical injury.
“Driving under the influence is a crime that is as reckless as it is entirely avoidable,” said Attorney General Neronha. “When this defendant drove drunk, he endangered the lives of everyone on the road that evening, including the six victims that he sent to the hospital for serious injuries. There is no excuse for this type of behavior, and my Office will continue to hold accountable those who threaten the lives of others by driving impaired.”
Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove that Guy drove under the influence and caused a crash on Route 195 East in East Providence.
On May 24, 2022, at approximately 7:25 p.m., the defendant drove his motor vehicle in the wrong direction on Route 195 East and collided head-on with multiple vehicles.At approximately 7:33 p.m., East Providence and Rehoboth Police Departments notified the Rhode Island State Police of the collision.
After troopers arrived on the scene, first responders transported Guy to Rhode Island Hospital for serious injuries. While at the hospital, law enforcement officials attempted a field sobriety test and requested the defendant submit to a chemical blood test, to which he refused. Officials then obtained a search warrant for his blood, and the test revealed his blood alcohol content to be .109. Later, the Rhode Island State Police performed a crash reconstruction and determined the defendant to be driving at 88 miles per hour just prior to the crash.
Six victims sustained serious injuries from the crash. Rescue personnel transported five of the victims to Rhode Island Hospital, and a sixth was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Special Assistant Attorney General Stephen Regine of the Attorney General’s Office and Detective Corporal Adam Houston and Detective Corporal Brian Macera of the Rhode Island State Police led the investigation and prosecution of the case.
