Bristol County man arraigned nearly 100 times, sentenced to prison after wrong-way crashes on Route 195

A 31-year-old Dighton man, who while high on drugs, led Rehoboth Police on a chase through multiple towns into Rhode Island before causing a serious collision in that state, was sentenced recently to state prison for the crimes committed in Massachusetts, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

Cary Guy pled guilty in Fall River Superior Court last week to indictments charging him with two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, OUI-Drugs-second offense, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License. He was sentenced to serve three years in prison.

On May 24, 2022, Rehoboth Police Detective Arthur Beaudoin was working a patrol shift on Moulton Street. As Detective Beaudoin was using his stationary radar to check the speeds of passing vehicles, a Ford F150 pickup truck passed his location at a high rate of speed. Detective Beaudoin’s radar indicated that the F150 was operating at 53MPH in a 40 MPH zone and still accelerating at the time. Detective Beaudoin activated his blue lights and effectuated a motor vehicle stop.

The F150 came to a stop and as Detective Beaudoin walked to the vehicle, the truck pulled away at a high rate of speed. Detective Beaudoin gave chase and observed the F150 operating at a high rate of speed, often travelling in the opposite lane of travel and passing motor vehicles in the wrong lane. The operation of the F150 was so erratic that other officers could not position themselves to deploy stop sticks. On two separate occasions, Detective Beaudoin pulled his cruiser next to the F150 and the truck swerved aggressively at him, causing him to swerve to avoid being hit. The F150 ran numerous stop signs without stopping, where it took the ramp onto Rt. 195 westbound. Detective Beaudoin followed the F150 onto Rt. 195 and alerted the Massachusetts and Rhode Island state police of the ongoing chase. Once on Rt. 195, the F150 continued to operate erratically and pulled onto the grassy median, performed a U turn and began to drive on Rt. 195 Eastbound.

Based on the danger of the ongoing pursuit, the pursuit was called off. Detective Beaudoin continued on Rt. 195 in an attempt to monitor the F150 without chasing it. Detective Beaudoin observed that the F150 had again crossed the grassy median and was now operating on Rt. 195 in the wrong direction. The F150 crossed into East Providence where it struck five vehicles as it continued to operate in the wrong direction. 6 people suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision. As Detective Beaudoin arrived at the accident scene, he observed the operator of the F150 and sole occupant of the vehicle to be injured and lying on the roadway. He was identified as Cary Guy. Several hypodermic needles were found in the truck. Guy was arrested by the Rhode Island State Police. At the hospital, blood was taken from the defendant and sent out for analysis. It tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, morphine and fentanyl.

Guy had a previous OUI-Drugs conviction out of the Attleboro District Court in 2017. In addition, at the time of this offense, Guy’s license was suspended for being a habitual traffic offender. He has faced nearly 100 arraignment

Guy has also been indicted in Rhode Island and faces a significant sentence for the charges he picked up relating to the crash and injuries to the other drivers after he fled Rehoboth.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jason Mohan.

“The defendant is a habitual traffic offender, who shouldn’t have even been driving. He engaged in outrageous operation of a motor vehicle and had utter disregard for the safety of other motorists. Unfortunately, his intentional and reckless conduct resulted in a serious injury of a person in Rhode Island. The defendant has demonstrated he is a menace on the road and needs to be kept off the street to protect innocent civilians,” District Attorney Quinn said.
