Bristol County man dead in fatal shooting after pointing gun at police

A 35-year-old Bristol County man is dead after an incident involving officers on Tuesday.

According to Bristol County District Attorney, Thomas Quinn, the preliminary investigation suggests that Stephen Maclean was fatally shot at his home at King Phillip Apartments on King Phillip Street in Raynham after opening the door and pointing a gun at officers.

Quinn stated that two officers fired shots while another deployed a stun gun.

Maclean was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

On Monday, Maclean was arrested on disorderly conduct and intimidation of a witness charges in a case involving his girlfriend.

Probation officials requested that the deceased be detained due to the new arrest because the deceased was on probation for an operating under the influence case second offense at the time of yesterday’s arrest, but a district court judge released him on personal recognizance.

Quinn stated that officers were dispatched to Maclean’s apartment several times since Monday. On Tuesday he reportedly went to work intoxicated, was fired, and came back home. The DA’s office says that preliminarily, Maclean was allegedly being belligerent and aggressive which led to police being called to his apartment.  

Body cameras recorded the shooting, according to Quinn.

No officers were injured, and Quinn noted that this was another example of officers putting their lives in jeopardy.

The following is a statement from Raynham Police Chief David LaPlante:

“The Raynham Police Department is releasing the names of two officers involved in yesterday’s officer-involved shooting.

Sgt. Frank Pacheco and Officer Jennifer Lang, both 12-year veterans of the Raynham Police Department, were placed on administrative leave Tuesday per the department’s policies and procedures. They will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation remains ongoing by State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and any further inquiries into this matter should be referred to their office.”
