Bristol County inmate volunteers help Somerset Marine Veterans
Inmate volunteers in the Community Work Program are out and about across Bristol County Monday-Friday (and sometimes on the weekends) doing various projects for schools, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
On Thursday, some of them were painting at the LCPL John J Van Gyzen Det. 1285 Marine Corps League on High St in Somerset. “They help us out tremendously,” said Bruce Aldrich of the Marine Corps. League. “All of us are basically in our 70s and 80s so we’re getting a little too old to do this kind of stuff.”
The organization is made up entirely of Marine Corps. veterans and some of its every day activities include visiting veterans in nursing homes and sending care packages to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. “This is such a big help to us,” Bruce continued. “We can’t thank them enough.”
