Authorities warn people and pet owners of coyotes as mating season begins

Officials are warning residents and pet owners concerning coyote mating season.

According to the Enfield Connecticut Community Cat Project, the next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March.

The Truro Police Department, in Massachusetts state that during March, coyotes seek out and excavate their den sites. In April, after a 60-day gestation period, the female gives birth to four to seven pups. Coyotes are most active from just before sunset until shortly after sunrise. Coyotes will at times be out during the daylight hours in search of a food source.

Do not leave pets outside unattended, especially during hours of darkness. TPD recommend that you put your pet on a leash and accompany them outside and to not leave your pet’s food outside. This will invite wildlife into your yard, which may attract coyotes. Eliminate the availability of birdseed. Coyotes are attracted to the concentration of birds and rodents that come to feeders. Coyotes can and will jump over fences and barriers when searching for food. Keep your garbage in a storage area, or a tightly sealed container. Clean garbage areas regularly to reduce residual odors by cleaning them out with hot water and bleach. If you see a coyote, make loud noises, wave your arms, but do not approach.

Coyote sightings have become more prevalent in the last few years in the Fall River area.
