Authorities say head-on crash on Route 44 results in two injured, one charged

TAUNTON — Police Chief Edward J. Walsh reports that the Taunton Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Wednesday night which resulted in two parties being injured.

At just before 9:30 p.m., the Taunton Police Department received reports of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Burt Street and Winthrop Street (Route 44).

Upon arrival, first responders observed a Honda Accord and a Toyota Camry that appeared to have collided head-on. Both drivers had exited their cars prior to the arrival of responding officers.

An initial investigation determined that the driver of the Honda Accord allegedly swerved into the opposite lane, hitting the Toyota Camry head-on.

Officers who spoke to the driver of the Honda Accord reported an odor of alcohol emanating from him.  Field Sobriety Tests were unable to be administered due to the injuries from the crash.

Both the driver of the Honda Accord and the driver of the Toyota Camry were transported to a Rhode Island hospital by Brewster Ambulances for their injuries.

The Taunton Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The scene was cleared at approximately 12:32 a.m.

The driver of the Honda Accord, a 38-year-old Providence man will be summoned to court and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Marked Lanes Violation. His name was not released.

The crash remains under investigation by the Taunton Police Department and the Taunton Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
