A 55-year-old Somerset man died Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle on Wilbur Avenue as he was walking in the roadway near the intersection of Brayton Avenue.

According to Gregg Miliote of the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Somerset Police received a 911 call from the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

A preliminary investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and Somerset Police revealed that the driver of a Chevy Silverado was travelling westbound on Wilbur Avenue through the intersection with Brayton Point Road when he struck Matthew Martinville in the roadway.

The 49-year-old Swansea man immediately stopped his truck, attempted to assist the victim, and called 911 to report the incident. Martinville was rushed to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Miliote stated that the driver cooperated with police and was interviewed by police Wednesday night.

The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. No criminal charges have been filed.
