Massachusetts fire department performs first on scene blood transfusion after serious collision
The Canton Firefighter Union announced Saturday that they have field transfused their first patient since starting their new Blood Transfusion Program.
Saturday morning at 4:45 a.m. CFD was called to the scene of a single car motor vehicle crash by Braintree Firefighters.
It was a high speed MVA into a parked truck and it took 40 minutes to extricate the patient. The Field Transfusion Truck was requested to the scene and arrived as the patient was extricated. The Blood Paramedic assessed the patient in the Brewster Ambulance and the transfusion was started. The Team went with the Brewster Paramedics in the ambulance to the trauma center.
The patient continued to receive blood in the ER and OR, went to surgery and then to the ICU.
