Woman shot by police in Norwood standoff expected to survive, authorities say
Authorities have issued an update concerning a woman who was shot by police during a standoff recently.
According to police and the preliminary investigation, a 911 call came in on Friday shortly before 1:00 p.m. concerning a middle-aged woman from Norwood that went into a business where a dispute between her and a man took place.
The woman allegedly pointed a gun at the man she was having the dispute with at Extra Space Storage on Morse Street in Norwood.
She reportedly proceeded to go into the parking lot outside of the business and put a gun against her head.
Marked and unmarked units from the Norwood Police Department arrived on scene to find the woman with the gun against her head. Officers reportedly tried to negotiate with her for several minutes before she began to walk around the parking lot and on several occasions walked toward the officers all while alternating pointing the gun against her head and at officers.
The woman than reportedly went out into the street close to officers while pointing the gun at them when an officer fired a single shot hitting her in her mid-section.
911 was then called by authorities and officers rushed to her aid until an ambulance arrived on scene. The woman was eventually transported to a Boston hospital by medflight.
On Sunday, the Norwood Police Department stated that the woman was still hospitalized but is expected to survive.
Chief William Brooks commended his officers on how long they held off before shooting the woman and how they handled the situation in general.
The incident is under investigation by Norwood Police, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police.
