I found the perfect scone at New Boston Bakery in Fall River
The perfect after-lunch snack (sometimes breakfast) is a coffee and scone and I found the perfect scone at New Boston Bakery at 279 New Boston Rd near the Oak Grove Cemetry and Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.
Scones originated in Scotland and are now a popular breakfast or snack worldwide. In fact, one of my favorite scones is made at Starbucks in Seoul, South Korea (very different than the U.S. Starbucks). Primarily made with wheat, barley, or oatmeal, I prefer a scone over a muffin because scones have less sugar and fat.
In the popular Fall River group on Facebook, I asked members who makes the city’s best scones, and the overwhelming response was New Boston Bakery. They were absolutely correct.
I visited New Boston Bakery last week and connect with owner Jim Souza who has been serving customers for decades. The bakery/cafe staff bake their scones in-house early in the morning and the constant foot traffic confirms the popularity of the place. I even bumped into Mayor Paul Coogan enjoying breakfast with Executive Vice President at Bristol County Economic Development Consultants Ken Fiola. The good news for those who like to sit and enjoy their baked goods is most people pick up and there is plenty of seats to include some outside seating during the warm spring and summer months. While there is no dedicated parking at the location, there is plenty of street parking nearby.
For me, I like a simple blueberry scone with no sugar or other toppings. I tried New Boston Bakery’s ‘Very Berry” which was a pleasant upgrade with blueberries and raspberries. The bakers do not skimp on the fruit and the scone was moist, something I prefer over some of the dryer scones that you’ll find at Starbucks in America. The coffee was excellent as well and the staff was very friendly.
New Boston Bakery is open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3 pm and closed on the weekends. I highly recommend you give them a visit.
