Another serious crash involving a Massachusetts State Police cruiser occurred on Saturday morning.

According to Dave Procopio of Massachusetts State Police, Two Massachusetts State Troopers were conducting a motor vehicle stop on Route 24 south in Avon, and were outside their cruisers, when both cruisers were struck by another vehicle shortly before 9:00 a.m.

The cruisers, both marked Ford Explorer patrol vehicles, were parked in the breakdown lane with emergency lights activated; the Troopers were standing outside the cruisers and oncoming traffic was slowing and moving over for them.

At approximately 8:55 a.m., a 2014 Dodge Journey SUV approached the scene at a high rate of speed in the right lane. The driver of the Dodge lost control of his vehicle and struck a 2018 Jeep Wrangler ahead of it that had slowed and was moving over. After hitting the Jeep, the Dodge rolled over into both cruisers. Both Troopers were able to avoid getting hit by the Dodge.

The operator of the Dodge, a 37-year-old Middleborough man, was evaluated on-scene by a passing by Brewster EMS ambulance crew. He refused further medical attention. The Jeep driver, a 31-year-old Raynham woman, was not injured.

The Dodge’s driver was cited for speeding, following too close, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, marked lanes violation, and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

One cruiser sustained moderate rear-end damage, while the other sustained major driver side damage. The Dodge Journey had major damage and the Jeep Wrangler, moderate damage. Both cruisers and the Dodge required tows.

The State Police Association of Massachusetts issued yet another plea to motorists.

“This is, yet again, another prime example of why all drivers must SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER when approaching an emergency vehicle.”
