Westport Firefighters, along with mutual aid companies from surrounding towns responded to a structure fire in Westport Point late this morning.
According to the department, the first arriving engine encountered heavy fire in the kitchen area of the two-story dwelling that was attached to the United States post office.
Initial reports were that all occupants were out of the building however, two cats and one dog remained unaccounted for.
While firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire, firefighters searched the dwelling for extension and for the animals. Both the two cats and the dog were removed from the structure. The dog was semi-responsive with labored breathing. Firefighters were able to revive the dog and he was transported to a local animal hospital. At last report, all animals were doing well and are expected to survive.
A Westport firefighter was treated and transported for heat exhaustion by Westport firefighter/paramedics to a local hospital. At last report he was doing well.
The US post office was not damaged and is expected to reopen tomorrow.

The cause of the fire, which is not considered suspicious, it’s under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Fire investigation unit.
