Attleboro Fire, Massachusetts State Police, respond to multiple tractor-trailer/SUV highway crash with injuries

ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Department responded Friday afternoon to a crash involving two tractor-trailers and an SUV on Interstate 295 North that shut down all northbound lanes and sent two people to the hospital.

According to the department, at just before 3:00 p.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to I-295 North near mile marker 3.4 for a reported motor vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer.

As crews approached the scene, heavy traffic and gridlock made access to the crash difficult. Emergency vehicles entered the highway and traveled south in the northbound lanes to reach the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found two tractor-trailers and an SUV involved in the crash. One of the tractor-trailers, which was carrying a load of sand, had rolled onto its side and was blocking all northbound lanes.

Paramedics immediately began assessing and triaging those involved for injuries. Two people were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The patients included the male driver of the overturned tractor-trailer and the female driver of the SUV.

Firefighters also found that the overturned tractor-trailer was leaking a significant amount of vehicle fluids. Crews deployed containment bins and used sand to control the leaking fluids and prevent them from reaching nearby soft ground and storm drains.

Attleboro firefighters remained on scene while the tractor-trailer was up righted and secured for removal by a towing company.

All northbound lanes of I-295 remained closed until approximately 5:15 p.m.

The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
