Westport shark sighting leads to Purple Flag Warning; beach goers at some locations not allowed in the water

WESTPORT, MA – A shark sighting is putting a damper on the three-day weekend for beach goers.

The Westport Fire Department has announced that at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, there was a credible shark fin sighting which has led to a Purple Flag Warning for dangerous marine life.

A Purple Flag is flying at Westport Beaches which indicates the presence of dangerous marine life, such as jellyfish or other hazardous creatures, in the water.

According to the Town of Westport Recreation Department, Cherry & Webb Beach lifeguards & Horseneck Beach lifeguards are not letting anyone in the water today due to the shark sighting.
