17-year-old Massachusetts teen dies in tragic dirt bike accident
A Massachusetts teen has tragically died doing what he loved most.
On Tuesday, West Brookfield Rescue Squad was dispatched mutual aid to Brookfield for a patient involved in a dirt bike accident. Due to the nature of the incident and initial reports from the scene, LifeFlight was requested. With assistance from Brookfield Fire, the patient was treated on scene and transported to the landing zone. The patient was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
It was later revealed by NESC Motocross that 17-year-old Alex Mechachonis, passed away after crashing at a practice track at MX Twenty-Three. Alex had been racing since 2022 and had great success including three championships in the 2025 NESC Spring series.
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, Mechachonis was “a passionate dirt bike racer, friend, and loved member of the community. Alex brought energy, kindness, and dedication to everything he did, and his loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew him.”
After consultation, the track reopened on Saturday.
More details surrounding the incident have not yet been released.
This is at least the 2nd notable teen dirt bike death in the last two years in Massachusetts.
Services for Mechachonis have not yet been announced.
