When police arrived, they discovered a deceased male victim laying in the left travel lane of Rt. 1 northbound. The victim was subsequently identified as 42-year-old Patrick E. Royster of Taunton, MA.
The operator of the first vehicle that struck the victim remained on scene and made himself known to police. He is identified as a 50-year-old from Plainville. No charged have been filed against him at this time.
Police were informed a second vehicle also struck the victim while he was down in the roadway. According to the witness, the second vehicle, described as a pickup truck with a plow, stopped at the scene and then left before police arrived. The witness provided a registration plate number for the pickup truck that led police to the operator identified as 73-year-old Gregory Stahl of Wrentham. Stahl is being charged with Leaving the Scene of a Collision, Causing Death and Expired License.
Information gathered at the scene indicates the male victim was walking northbound in the southbound breakdown lane along Route 1 and attempted to cross the highway when he was struck by the SUV that was operating north on Route 1 and then struck again by the pickup truck.
