A Massachusetts man is dead after a recent multi-vehicle highway crash.

According to Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Massachusetts State Troopers assigned to the Middleborough Barracks responded to a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 northbound in Middleborough that resulted in the death of the operator of one of the vehicles.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer unit was traveling on Interstate 495 when, for reasons still under investigation, it rear-ended three vehicles slowing for traffic. The driver of a GMC Terrain, a 71-year-old West Wareham man, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, where he was pronounced deceased. The operator of another vehicle involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital in Brockton. The other two drivers involved did not report injuries.

All lanes of Interstate 495 northbound near exit 12 were closed for two hours. The crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and investigators from the Plymouth County State Police Detective Unit.
