52-year-old pedestrian killed, 56-year-old driver cited, after evening collision in Newport

The Newport Police Department has announced the tragic death of a pedestrian involved in a motor vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 10:23 p.m. on Monday.

A 52-year-old local resident was struck while crossing in a designated crosswalk on Broadway at Bedlow Avenue. 

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 56-year- old local resident.

The Newport Fire Department responded quickly to the scene and transported the victim directly to Rhode Island Hospital. However, despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Rhode Island Hospital. The Newport Police Department is actively attempting to notify the next of kin. 

The Newport Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed against the operator. He was cited for Right of Way in Crosswalk (first offense) and Operating without Evidence of Insurance. 

Police are urging any witnesses that have not given a statement regarding the accident or anyone with additional information to contact the Newport Police Department at 401-847-1306. 

Lieutenant Joseph Carroll stated that “this tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety, and we urge drivers to remain vigilant, especially in areas with heavy foot traffic.”

    I can’t believe that the person only got a ticket I for that I could not live with my self 💔 if I did that he was a ex boyfriend of my ex wife she really sad 😔 about that I am to he was a real person and we will moss him a lot now God got a Angel now now he has a home now 🙏 see 👀 you one day .
