42-year-old man from Massachusetts, 4-year-old Indiana child, among three killed in head-on Michigan crash

CALHOUN COUNTY, MICH. Michigan State Police Marshall post troopers are investigating a two-vehicle head-on triple fatal traffic crash that occurred early Monday morning around 12:30 a.m. on I-94 Hwy Westbound east of 22-1/2 Mile Rd in Marengo Township.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a Ford pick-up was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it struck a minivan traveling westbound. The driver of the Ford pick-up, a 42-year-old man from Massachusetts, succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene. It is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt.

Two occupants of the minivan, the 46-year-old male driver from Indiana and a 4-year-old female passenger, both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. Four additional occupants, one adult and three children, were transported to Oaklawn and Bronson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The deceased driver of the minivan and the other adult occupant were wearing seatbelts; however, the three children in the minivan were not in child safety seats or wearing seatbelts.

It is unknown if drug or alcohol use was involved.

None of the names of the deceased were released.

Investigation and cleanup of the scene resulted in the freeway being shut down for approximately 5 hours. MSP is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Marshall Post at 269-558-0500.

Troopers were assisted by Albion Police Department, Marshall Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Calhoun County Central Dispatch, Marshall Fire Department, and the Marengo Fire Department.

This incident remains open pending further investigation.
