42-year-old Fall River man charged in Somerset double stabbing; preliminary investigation released

A Fall River man is facing charges after a weekend double stabbing at a Somerset motel.

According to police, 42-year-old Kyle Barboza of Fall River has been arrested for a double stabbing committed at the Riverview Inn & Suites on Saturday.

On Saturday, police dispatch received a call from the front desk clerk of the motel who stated that a female guest was in the lobby and was bleeding from a neck wound. Officers and medics were immediately dispatched to the motel to investigate and render aid.

Upon his arrival, Officer Tyler Botelho discovered the female had left the lobby. He also noted the presence of blood in the area and called for additional assistance before making his way to the room registered to the female. As he approached the open door of the room, he observed the injured female holding a cloth on her neck. He also saw two males struggling against each other with one male trying to hold the other down. A bloody knife was on the floor next to the males. The injured female advised Officer Botelho that the male on the floor, later identified as Kyle Barboza, had been in the room with them before he suddenly attacked her, attempting to cut her throat. She added that her boyfriend, who was holding Barboza on the floor, was also injured in the attack. Officer Botelho was soon joined by Lt. Adam DaRosa and Officers David Labreche and William Goodale. All involved persons were separated and secured by officers while Somerset Fire Paramedics began providing medical aid for their injuries. All three were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Somerset Detectives Lieutenant Jason Matos, Sergeant Nicholas Davidson, and Detective Don Cormier responded to the motel and began processing the crime scene. They also responded to the hospitals and questioned those involved to determine what occurred in the motel room that evening. During their continued investigation, Detectives learned additional information about the unprovoked attack initiated by Barboza.

The victims stated they were contacted by Barboza earlier in the day and were asked if he could stay with them at the motel. They agreed to pick him up and soon after brought Barboza to their hotel room at the Riverview Inn and Suites. The victims stated all was normal at the motel and they decided to get ready to go shopping. While the male victim was in the bathroom, the female victim stated Barboza came up from behind her and attempted to cut her throat using a large knife. Barboza then struck her on her head with the knife before she screamed for help from her boyfriend. The boyfriend reported that he was attacked by Barboza as he exited the bathroom to help his girlfriend. Once out of the bathroom, the male victim was cut or stabbed multiple times while he attempted to fend off and disarm his attacker. He was able to wrench the knife from Barboza’s hands but suffered additional wounds in the process. He fought back and was eventually able to force Barboza to the floor and hold him there until police arrived.

Barboza is hospitalized, under arrest, and being monitored by Somerset officers until such time as he is discharged from the hospital and arraigned by the Court.

The Somerset Police Department will be charging Kyle Barboza with Two counts of Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury (to wit: knife) and two counts of Attempted Murder.

Barboza is currently being held on $500,000 cash bail.
