4 taken to the hospital after business evacuated due to hazmat situation in Fall River
Several people were sent to the hospital Thursday after a hazmat situation in Fall River.
According to Captain Barden Castro, at approximately 12:24 p.m., fire and police responded to JT Realty Group, 1392 Rodman Street, which is the former DeViller’s Pharmacy. Upon arrival, it was discovered that an employee of the business was cleaning out a back room when he attempted to close an old safe and an unknown liquid began dripping out of a compartment inside.
Castro stated that the unidentified substance was an unknown irritant which caused the business to be evacuated and a hazardous materials response from the fire department. Four people were transported to St. Anne’s Hospital for exposure to the substance. Castro believes all parties were evaluated at the hospital and discharged.
A Massachusetts state HazMat team was requested to the scene as well as the state police bomb squad. Both entities removed the still unknown substance.
