Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that the statewide Grand Jury returned an indictment charging a Rhode Island man with murder and related assault and firearms counts stemming from a 2021 shooting in Providence.

On May 26, 2023, the Statewide Grand Jury returned a secret indictment charging 30-year-old Kelvin Maldonado with two counts of murder, two counts of discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, one count of conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of carrying a pistol without a license, and one count of possession of a firearm after a previous conviction of a crime of violence.

At a hearing on June 13, 2023, the secret indictment was unsealed, and Maldonado was arraigned in Providence County Superior Court.

It is alleged that on June 20, 2021, Maldonado murdered Abdoulaye Diallo of Woonsocket and Abass Mbaye of Senegal, and fired upon a third male victim.

At the arraignment, Maldonado was ordered held without bail and remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions. He is scheduled for a determination of attorney conference on June 21, 2023, in Providence County Superior Court.

According to WJAR10, the three men were shot at an after-hours party in the Wanskuck neighborhood after a fight broke out.
