18-year-old held on bail on list of charges after shooting victim found at Bristol County hospital

STOUGHTON — Chief Donna McNamara reports that the Stoughton Police Department made an arrest in a daytime shooting on Saturday.

Stoughton dispatch received a 911 call for shots fired in the area of Central Street and Greenwood Avenue. Officers arrived quickly and obtained a description of a man seen fleeing the area.

Officers set a perimeter and began to conduct a search. A man fitting the description of the suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Marc Francois of Stoughton, was located near a condominium complex.

A firearm has been recovered.

Officers, continuing their investigation, began to call area hospitals. Within 45 minutes, a Stoughton Police officer determined that another male had self-admitted at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro with a gunshot wound. It was determined that this individual was shot in Stoughton.

Francois is accused of allegedly shooting a Rhode Island man he had arranged to meet. He faces the charges of Assault and Battery with a Firearm, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Carrying Firearm Without a License, Possession of Ammunition without a License, Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, Disorderly Conduct, and Armed Robbery.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, however information obtained during the investigation suggests that this was not a random act of violence and that there is no greater threat of danger to the community.

Chief McNamara wishes to acknowledge the diligent work of Stoughton Police officers and detectives as well as K-9 units from the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office and Quincy Police, who quickly responded, and using their advanced training were able to identify both alleged parties involved in this incident in less than one hour.

“The safety of our community is paramount, and when violence strikes, our residents should expect a rapid response and diligent investigation by our officers, who did exactly that in this incident,” Chief McNamara said. “This is a great example of professional policing at work during a rapidly unfolding incident.”

Francois was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail, and he will be arraigned Tuesday at Stoughton District Court.
