120 apartments planned for Route 6 complex, new business to be announced soon
A developer is planning to help create 120 new apartments on Route 6.
At Wednesday’s Somerset Board of Selectmen meeting, Marc Landry, representing South Coast Hospitality out of Cranston RI, gave a presentation on how he wants to continue to develop Fairfield Commons. This time it would involve two apartment buildings with four stories.
Landry stated that the development would consist of luxury apartments with 30 of them being 40B affordable housing (80% of average median income for area and not more than 30% of income for rent and utilities). A fitness center would also be on the property. 12 of the apartments would have three bedrooms (almost 1,200 square feet), 42 of the apartments would have two bedrooms (a little over 1,000 square feet), and 66 would have one bedroom (700-780 square feet). All units would have a washer and dryer and modern appliances.
A new business at the Fairfield Commons is also expected to be announced soon as Landry developed the current hotel and business complex that contains Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s, and soon, Pancheros Mexican Grill.
Landry commented that much would be within walking distance for residents of the future development and the units would be perfect for those looking to downsize, empty nesters, or those that don’t want to own any longer.
The two apartment buildings would be 46 feet tall which is lower than the current hotel. The ceilings would be 9 feet high.
The main concern expressed by the board is possible traffic issues, particularly in the morning. Selectman Allen Smith stated that with the rail coming to Fall River, that Somerset needs more affordable housing. Landry stated that improvements have been made to help with traffic.
Overall, the board was in favor of the proposal.
