Wrentham police officers make great save as woman jumps from burning building
Massachusetts police officers made a life-saving rescue during a blaze on Monday.
According to Police Chief Bill McGrath, Wrentham Police & Fire responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a house fire on Woolford Road.
Callers reported a woman was trapped on the second floor, coughing and screaming for help.
Sgt. Jon Coliflores, Officer Mark Miscavage and Officer Mike Flinn were first on scene and found the home engulfed in flames. Hearing screams, the officers ran to the back side of the house and located a woman on a second floor balcony.
Quickly assessing the situation, the officers realized there was no way for them to enter the house as the first floor was completely engulfed. At that point, they coaxed the woman to jump off the balcony into their arms so they could break her fall. With no other options, she climbed over the railing and fell to the waiting officers. She was then assisted away from the fire to a safe area on the street. She was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Wrentham Fire Department were on scene within seconds and began battling the blaze, dogged by heat wave temperatures and hampered by limited access to the side of the home facing the water. Nonetheless, with mutual aid assistance from several area fire departments, firefighters were able to gain control and put the fire down.
One mutual aid firefighter was transported to a local hospital, apparently suffering from dehydration.
McGrath noted, “great job by Police, Fire and let’s not forget our MECC 911 dispatchers who juggled a zillion calls (I counted them) all at once.”
