While migrant families get $120,000 in housing benefits disabled Massachusetts Veterans mostly get a $250-a-year cash increase
While Massachusetts Democrats passed budgets giving migrant families $120,000 in annual housing benefits the House is proposing this month a meager $250 annual increase for disabled Veterans to go along with a few other perks.
According to Senator Michael Rodrigues, it costs $10,000 per family or $75 million per month just to house mostly migrant families in the Massachusetts emergency shelter system where single veterans do not get preference over foreign born new arrivals with children. While Massachusetts veterans get preference in permanent housing, families with young children regardless of their legal status, get prioritized in the emergency shelter system. Just last month, House Democrats voted against giving preference to Massachusetts residents and even veterans over others which include newly arrived migrants in the emergency shelter system.
Several local area state reps including Fall River Representative Alan Silvia rationalized his no vote by saying Veterans already get preference (not true for the emergency shelter system) and the House members will be taking care of Veterans on the veterans bill in June. While the House version of the bill does provide a $250 annual payment increase to disabled veterans and a few other nice perks, the Hero Act doesn’t provide any extra benefits for veterans in housing or the emergency shelter system. Instead, Massachusetts State Reps increased the annual payment mentioned about from $2,000 to $2,250 in 2024 and from $2,250 to $2,500 in 2025, but you must be blind, paraplegic, or have a disability to receive this money. Most veterans are not disabled, so most veterans will only see small benefits from the Hero Act. You can read a summary of the Hero Act here which details all the increased benefits.
Migrants just have to have a child to get $10,000 worth of monthly housing not available to homeless veterans without a child. Migrants also get EBT cards, educational benefits and a dozen other benefits which total about $150,000 in annual benefits – event those who did not follow immigration laws. You can see a list of benefits Massachusetts provides veterans here which doesn’t seem like anything close to what newly arrived migrants are getting.
In short, your Massachusetts politicians provide $150,000 in annual benefits for people who broke the law to get to Massachusetts yet only added $250 to a meager $2,000 annual payment for getting wounded while serving your country.

It’s true. I’m in Missouri and I have been trying to get my interview for My 100 in FS. For over a month. I didnt receive them last month as well. The system is so busy its flooded the system. Evan the phones to reach them I went yesterday and the line was longer than it had ever been. I stood in line to be told it was too late now and need to come back tomorrow. It was only 3 by that point and were open for another 2 hrs. Had they not had the line it should have only been a 5 minute process. I am 61 but was turned down for SSDI turned me down since the disease I have is rare. The normal amount is 291 for one but I receive 700 from my late husbands pension.so I get a little over 100. These families that were there all had at least 4 kids with them. I’ve been waiting for 5 yrs for a place to live. We are treated like 2nd class citizens while non citizens the red carpet

We get a quarter of Cash assistance and Food Stamps for a family of four through TANF. A Migrant Fsmily of 3 are getting $400 more in Cash Assistence and $412. In Food Stamps.
We are not given food daily. This is US Citizens born and raised here. With Grest Grandparents who had to pay to got on the boats to Eliss Island. Poor and doing it the legal way! Mom’s who have run to save their Families Lives from Horrific Domestic Violence. We are left to go hungry, treated as if we are nothing and not allowed to talk to the Attorney’s who come in twice a week only to work with the Immigrants we are told to call the numbers listed online.
My license was suspended due to excise taxes. The zmigrants are getting the Permitd paid for and driving lessons and license paid for.
Mom’s who are trying are hardest to move forward are only being held back by this system. My Chdren have had the same 1 pair of sneakers from 2 school years ago. Each Migrant has 3 pairs of sneakers each. Air jordans in fact as 1 of 3 sneakers. No winter coat,hat, gloves nothing for us.
You know who received brand new NorthFace Jackets? Not us.

One daughter has lost over 30 lbs after entering EA Shelter. My younger daughter has lost 22 lbs

Absolutely horrible and disgusting…. I can’t even get into an emergency shelter and there is a year waiting list for Americans. Spoke with them and was told to exhaust ALL my options which included sleeping on family members couches with a child which is hard to do when u don’t have family. And when I have absolutely nowhere else to stay then they would see what they could do and all that is ,is to be put on the waiting list. And to be honest even after going thru all that and getting into a shelter how good is that going to do when the rent prices are absolutely ridiculous and the things they want to be able to rent are even worse. With 3 times the rent ,working minimum wage with 2 people doesn’t even cover a 1 bdrm apartment. If you have children it is illegal to rent a 1 bdrm with more than 3 people. Credit score of 630 or higher. And the application fees which honestly is where the scam comes in because most people are taking the application fees from the MULTIPLE people applying and not approving the applications at all. Seriously this country is falling apart and the middle class are starting to see what low income is like and low income people are pretty much being left to the dogs. Well in my opinon anyways.

Millionaire tax, a new proposed 4% tax in the sale of homes over 1 million, the crappy school systems, highest in the nation for auto insurance, “ the illegal, just pay 20% down and that’s it, uninsured for the rest of the year”. The Massachusetts democrat politicians put on a little show for the veterans on Veterans Day and that’s it. My love for this State has greatly faded under this new Massachusetts administration. we get what we deserve. It’s all fun and games until it hits your wallet and if you own a home in Massachusetts it’s gonna hit your wallet , administration is working very hard to find ways around the property tax laws just as they did they broke the constitution with the millionaires tax. It’s just the beginning for the taxing nightmare. Somebody’s going to pay iIt won’t be state workers. It won’t be municipal workers and it certainly won’t be the teachers it’s gonna be you. I challenge you to wake up and save this state from a nightmare that is coming, you can only do this at the ballot box.

I work for HUD. I have to move illegal migrant families to the top of the list to provide housing. Some of these American families have been on the list for 5 or more years. Many are vets. So believe me I see the payments coming in. 9k a month for housing providers that take illegal migrants. I’m mortified and ashamed I have to do this.

I am disgusted at what is hapopening to the US. We no longer care about our own citizens and many of us who worked hard to make a life and lost it through little fault of our own are homeless and struggling and no one will help us.something needs to change. I make a little over $1000 a month bcuz I am disabled now after being employed since age 14 genetic and hereditory health issue as well as 3 car accidents, a work injury none of which were my fault, living in public housing whom treat us like dirt, and now I am in fear of becoming homeless again 4th time in this life, because I speak up for myself and try to advocate for people with invisible disabilities. Or is it because I am NA, born here and I don’t count. This is definately not the american dream I once dreamt of. We need legal assistance and more advicacy. If your thinking of moving to Massachusetts, don’t it sucks and I hear its not much better in some other states.

I have neighbors who dont even live in their housing full time, theyve got 2 adult kids, 2 teenage and now 2 babies and all 4 adults have expensive cars and none of them work and so do many of the other foreign residents here. I have a 2007 dodge which costs money to upkeep and we are being raked over the coals by hoysing whenever my adult kid tries to qork more to move out they take the money. Sucks when you can’t even afford subidized public housing and none of your neighbors speak english. It’s really sad and all I can say is Karma is a bitch!

I’m 65 years old I’ve worked for 50 years in this country race three beautiful children. i’m disabled. I’ve saved with my 401(k) and had to use most of it for my medical issues. I’m unable to get mass health services leaving Social Security disability so why am I being punished? Should I go over there and expect the same treatment from the government or should I just go and stay over there for a year and then come back as immigrant or just lie if the Americans should go to war who Will come forward!!!!!

If everybody on this page contacted their representatives it would help. There was a survey done years ago and representatives at all levels of government complained they get very little feedback. Years ago many people sent letters to their representatives and I remember my mom getting responses. Nowadays you just emailed them and I do. I also get back email responses. I’ve already contacted them about this issue. That response was they had a bill coming. I’m not happy with it I will be contacting them again. You should all do the same. But be nice. That works a lot better

A good alternative would be to build single-family homes that could be gifted to newly arrived Americans. The average home costs about $360,000, so after three years, we would no longer pay their housing expenses.
Fall River has a long history of discrimination and racism. We can see the hatred and lack of education in many of the posts here simply because people are so angry that someone else is getting help when needed.
Thankfully, our politicians are doing the right thing.

There is definitely a problem with these politicians and the decisions they are making. Families that are residents of the United States, those who served THIS country receive less than people who are being bussed into this country. Why is it we are put on the back.burner. Yes, the U.S. is a melting pot but something is definitely wrong. When people use to immigrate here they had to have family or friends to move into, they were quarantined to prevent transmission of diseases such as TB and many others. They were also required to put down their language, if they were married and what they did for a living. My ancestors were Not given anything for free! They had to get an alien number or social security number. Many became U.S. citizens. Why now is this such a mess?? Is it all about money, voters, census!? The constitution guaranteed rights but politicians don’t seem to remember any of this. We are supposed to be a democracy; this country is changing. We, the U.S. is poor and the citizens are paying for it.

What about those people who were born here and can’t find low income housing not what people call low income housing by taking the county medium. And all the jobs taking or lost because we don’t have the money to help nursing homes keep it’s workers in their regular hours because we keep letting migrants in when we can’t even help those born here or those who were born here struggle with less money or benefits.

I have a family of 5 in a motel right now paying $650 weekly after our previous landlord was foreclosed on rendering us homeless but according to MA, not eligible for ANY assistance! I have 3 children, one with a disability. Several months ago, the immigrant bus dropped off 25 families to free rent, brand new clothes, phones, delivered 3 hot meals daily from a local restaurant, etc. Every day there was a state vehicle dropping off something until one by one they were all housed. My youngest son doesn’t even know what a kitchen is and with what I’m paying I’m pretty stuck here.

Explain the emergency shelter system please. I think there is a lot of missing information here. FYI just because you’re a veteran doesn’t mean you qualify for all benefits. There is a big difference between a Peace Time Veteran and a War Time Veteran. I don’t know what immigrants receive and I don’t think you know the whole story either. Let’s get the facts before getting everyone all upset.

The government is giving more to immigrants and the military men and women are on the streets homeless hungry they should never have to expect medical help from donations I think they earned it for the rest of their life and being on SS myself due to the ignorance of a sixteen yr old and the so called increase in SS OH please what good does it do when the dshs that’s what it’s called here takes the same amount out of your food stamps and then your rent goes up so you actually end up being in the hole even more and then you hear that your life line yeah right when it is going to be an emergency you can’t make a call because you have no service and then you hear that the funding for your life line is going to stop right being an american citizen really Im almost ashamed to be one butI am100 petcent

We need to vote all these politicians out, put in term limit, one vote with citizenship and ID by paper only no manipulating computer. Remove the pentagon funding and all other funding until they become accountable to the people and are transparent.
