Westport Recreation sets grand opening event to open new playground
A new Westport playground is set to open in the coming days.
According to the Westport Recreation Director Dana Stewart, the new playground near the Annex Building at 856 Main Road will have a grand opening on October 13th at 1:00 p.m.
The Recreation Department and Commission will do a short speech thanking those that helped make the new playground happen. They will also have an official ribbon cutting and have kids and families play on the playground.
“We hope to have a few extra treats and surprises there as well on this day! “
The rain date would be on October 14th.
The new playground at the Annex has a nautical theme, a nod to the history of the Westport community, and is in colors of blue, grey, tan and white. It features a large whale that kids can climb on, 5 slides of varying heights, multiple swings, many sensory panels, various climbing features, an inclusive see saw, an in-ground whirl spinner and deck levels with a ramp so it is inclusive to anyone in a wheelchair. The ground is a modern, rubberized surface with a pattern on it that is meant to mimic the Westport River. This kind of surface is currently the proven safety standard at the majority of playgrounds.
“A lot of time and attention went into the details of this playground, and we hope that the Westport community, and any visitors to our town, enjoys this playground for years to come!” said Stewart.
The project was made possible by the Recreation Department & Commission, a grant from an anonymous foundation, and Community Preservation Act Funds
Vendors who helped work on the project include MRC/GameTime, A.J. Potter Jr. & Sons, Inc., South East Fence & Supply, and Signature Signs.
With the completion of the Annex playground, the next project will be replacing Westport’s Bicentennial Playground.
