Westport Police arrest woman accused of writing checks from checkbook of veteran with dementia
A local woman is accused of stealing from an ill veteran.
According to Westport PD, on Friday, Westport Police served an arrest warrant at 666 State Road (Westport Housing Authority) for Bernadette Medeiros.
In May 2024, Westport Police took a complaint from the victim’s daughter reporting Medeiros wrote out four checks to herself using an elderly male Vietnam veteran’s checkbook. She then took those checks to a local bank and cashed them. Medeiros continued to go back to the victim’s residence targeting him for more money knowing he suffers from dementia.
Westport Detectives investigated the case and obtained an arrest warrant for Medeiros for 5 counts of larceny from an elderly/disabled person over 60 years of age.
