Westport Police arrest man on several firearm and OUI charges after incident
A man is facing gun and OUI charges after a recent traffic stop in Westport.
According to Westport Police, at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Officer Ryan Williams conducted a motor vehicle stop of a red Subaru WRX bearing a North Carolina registration. The vehicle was swerving across the roadway and following the vehicle in front of it too closely.
While speaking with the operator of the vehicle, Ian Ruml of Newport, North Carolina, Officer Williams formed the opinion that Ruml was operating under the influence of alcohol.
Sergeant Jarrod Levesque arrived to assist and Ruml was removed from the vehicle and placed in custody.
While Officer Williams was searching Ruml, Sergeant Levesque observed a firearm holster in the rear passenger area of the vehicle. When questioned about the holster Ruml stated “I don’t have a gun on my person.” During the motor vehicle inventory, a black Glock 9mm high-capacity handgun was located with a high-capacity magazine fully loaded with 15 rounds. Additional ammunition was also located in the vehicle.
Ruml will be arraigned on the charges of OUI Liquor 2nd Offense, Carrying a loaded firearm while OUI, Possession of a high-capacity firearm without a license, Possession of a high capacity feeding device, Possession of ammunition and related motor vehicle violations.

Each day in an officer’s life they are put in danger for their life. Thoughts & Prayers for them daily. Our world has changed so drastically that you never know what might occur in a matter of minutes.

Rob, I know reading is hard, but the offender was driving while intoxicated. You seem like a stay at home soccer dad. If he hit your minivan full of your kids or Girl Scout troop you lead, I’m sure you’d be upset. Probably blame the police. Tsk tsk tsk
