Westport educator recognized as Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress Outstanding Educator of the Year
A Westport educator recently received a prestigious honor.
The Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress has announced that the 2024 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award went to Sherrie Lees, an incredibly dedicated teaching assistant for Brenna Legendre for the last 11 years in the Westport Community Schools.
Nominated by Brenna’s mother, Kim Tripp Legendre, “Mrs. Lees goes above and beyond every single day by working with the school administration and teachers to ensure Brenna has the support she needs to succeed and be included,” explained Marissa O’Donnell, who presented the award on stage at MDSC’s Annual Educators Forum on behalf of her family’s Let It Shine Fund.
Sherrie constantly works with other educators to develop critical modifications and accommodations, and problem-solve scheduling challenges so that Brenna can thrive. “She takes her job to another level by willingly attending seminars and asking questions if she has a concern,” Kim said.
Having faced a personal tragedy in June, Sherrie returned to work this September saying, “I need to be with Brenna, she gives me the strength to move on.” According to Kim, “the incredible bond between Mrs. Lees and Brenna is beautiful and priceless; There is no team like the two of them.”
Congratulations Sherrie on being a 2024 MDSC Outstanding Educator of the Year!
