Victim’s name released in fatal Newport fire
On Sunday, September 1st, 2019 at approximately 4:32 pm, Newport Police Officers were dispatched to 47 Dudley Avenue, a single family home, for a report of a working fire.
According to Lt. Frank C. Rosa, Jr. Newport Fire Department Crews arrived on scene shortly thereafter and made entry into the home. Upon discovering a male person inside the home, NFD crews evacuated him from the home and transported him to Newport Hospital for treatment. He was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he subsequently passed away overnight.
The deceased is identified as Stephen J. Croughan, 68 of 47 Dudley Avenue, Newport, RI.
This fire is currently under investigation by the Rhode State Fire Marshall’s Office in conjunction with the Newport Fire Department Fire Marshall’s Office.
