The name of a man killed in a weekend highway crash has been released.

According to Rhode Island State Police, on Sunday, at just before 7:00 p.m., members of the Rhode Island State Police Hope Valley Barracks responded to a three-car crash on Route 95 North in the Town of Exeter. The initial investigation revealed that a 2011 Honda Accord had broken down on Route 95 North and was being towed by a 2024 Toyota Highlander. The Toyota and the Honda entered the first lane of travel of Route 95 North while operating at a slow rate of speed.

A short time later, the rear of the Honda was struck by the front of a Freightliner Attenuator truck while traveling at highway speeds. All three vehicles then came to rest across the highway, requiring all lanes to be closed until 10:30 p.m.

The operator of the Honda, 51-year-old Sandro R. Aguilar from Providence, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The two occupants of the Toyota, Aguilar’s 16-year-old son and his wife, were also transported to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries.

The operator of the Freightliner was not injured.

The Toyota was using only tie-down ropes to tow the Honda and didn’t have proper safety lights.

The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, the Forensic Services Unit, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, and the Detective Bureau.

Any additional witnesses are asked to contact the Hope Valley Barracks at 401-539-2323.
