Victim’s name released after Lynn man with 6 open cases held without bail in New Bedford homicide

A Massachusetts man was held without bail Monday after being accused of murdering a man in New Bedford.

According to Jennifer Sowa, Second Assistant District Attorney at the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday, New Bedford Police were called to the area outside of 1304 Acushnet Avenue for a report of a male stabbing victim.

The victim, 51-year-old Jesus Torres, was rushed to Saint Luke’s Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased after the altercation.

The suspect identified as, Angel Avelino, 32 years old of Lynn, Massachusetts was charged with Murder. 

Avelino was arraigned on Monday morning in New Bedford District Court where he pled not guilty.

His next court appearance is scheduled for November.

According to WJAR 10, Avelino has six open cases in Lynn, including assault and battery and larceny.

Massachusetts State Police Detectives, New Bedford Police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating the homicide.
