A man was arrested over the weekend after running over a police officer.

According to Barnstable Police, on Sunday at approximately 2:39 a.m., the Barnstable Police received a phone call regarding a suspicious motor vehicle parked in a driveway on Phinneys Lane in Hyannis. The caller informed the dispatcher that he did not recognize the car parked on his property.

Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Kevin Shaw and Officer Kristina Gustafson observed the driver of the vehicle, 23 year old Marstons Mills resident James Ledoux, to be unconscious. Shaw and Gustafson also observed that the locked vehicle was running and the car’s transmission was in reverse, but Ledoux’s foot was on the brake. Numerous attempts were made to wake Ledoux, however, he would not respond. Fearing Ledoux was suffering a medical emergency, Officer Shaw broke the passenger window, reached in and unlocked the car doors.

When Officer Gustafson attempted to place the vehicle in park, Ledoux took his foot off the brake and the vehicle began rolling towards the house. Officer Gustafson was dragged by the vehicle and her foot was then run over by the car’s tire. The car continued moving down the driveway and Officer Shaw was able to steer the car away from the house. The vehicle eventually crashed into a truck parked at the end of the driveway.

Hyannis Rescue was called to the scene and Officer Gustafson was transported to Cape Cod Hospital, where she was treated and released with minor injuries to her foot and ankle.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that James Ledoux was not suffering from any medical problems, but was intoxicated. Subsequently, Ledoux was placed under arrest for OUI Liquor, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (Motor Vehicle) and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

Ledoux was later bailed on personal recognizance. He is set to be arraigned in Barnstable District Court this morning.
