Two suspects being charged in Newport, Rhode Island double shooting located in Virginia

Newport, RI – Two suspects have been arrested concerning a shooting that took place recently in Newport.

On July 19th at just before 10:00 p.m., Newport Police Officers responded to the area of Truman Road and Rosedale Avenue for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived on scene, they located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds in their lower extremities with non-threatening injuries. 

On July 29, 2026, members of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 19-year-old Tyquan Johnson at an address on Chestnut Avenue in Newport News, Virginia on a warrant from the Newport Police Department for the charges of Felony Assault with a Firearm and Discharging a Firearm in a Compact Area. 

Also located at that residence was 18-year-old Nasydi Brown who was wanted by the Hampton Virginia Police Department for Reckless Handling of a Firearm Resulting in Serious Injury, Abuse or Neglect of a Child, Reckless Disregard for Life, Shooting in a Public Place Causing Injury, and Maliciously Shooting at an Occupied Building. 

Through the course of this investigation, Brown has been identified as the second suspect involved in this shooting. On August 3rd, 2026, Newport Police Detectives obtained a warrant for Felony Assault with a Firearm and Discharging a Firearm in a Compact Area for Brown. 

On July 30, 2026, Johnson had an extradition hearing where he waived extradition. This process is handled by the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office, and he will return to Rhode Island no later than August 18th, 2026. 

Brown is currently answering to the charges from the Hampton Virginia Police Department.

The Rhode Island Attorney General is handling the process of returning Johnson and Brown to Rhode Island.
