Two Newport students arrested after allegedly assaulting special needs student on multiple occasions

NEWPORT, RI – The Newport Police Department has provided an update on the ongoing investigation into the assault of a special needs student from Rogers High School by football players.

On Friday, Newport Police arrested a 16-year-old male Rogers High School student. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined the suspect assaulted the victim on two separate occasions. 

The individual was charged with two counts of felony assault on persons with severe impairments. 

Following continued investigation, on Saturday, a second 16-year-old male Rogers High School student was arrested and charged with assault against the same victim. 

In accordance with Rhode Island General Law, the Newport Police Department is strictly prohibited from releasing any juvenile names, detailed arrest reports, or specific court information related to these matters. 

School officials announced Friday that the football season is over for the team.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, the victim “was frightened, hurt, and deeply mistreated.”

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
