Two Massachusetts public school teachers hit it big on FOX’s song-naming game show ‘Beat Shazam’ hosted by Jamie Foxx
WOBURN – Woburn Superintendent Matthew Crowley and Principal Kristen Maloney wish to share that two Hurld Wyman Elementary School teachers tested their song-naming abilities on FOX’s game show “Beat Shazam.”
Kindergarten teacher Carol Carney and second-grade teacher Marlene Faulkingham were featured on the “School House Rock” episode of the Jamie Foxx-hosted series, which aired Monday, August 8.
The show consists of three two-person teams competing against each other to correctly identify the names of hit songs the fastest. The team with the most money banked by the final round competes against the song identification app Shazam for the chance to win a $1 million prize.
Leading up to the competition, Carney and Faulkingham practiced every day. Their hard work paid off, and they beat two other teams of educators, advancing to the final round and winning $111,000.
“We were dedicated and practiced a lot. We played music from every genre anytime and anywhere we could,” Faulkingham said.
Carney and Faulkingham were inspired to apply for the show following a series of wins in a game hosted by Principal Maloney at the school called “Name that Tune Tuesdays.” As a part of the game, Principal Maloney played a song over the school’s intercom and the person to call the office the fastest identifying the song won.
“Either Marlene or I won nearly every time. That was our sign to go on this show,” Carney said.
Carney has worked in the District for 22 years and Faulkingham for 15 years. The pair has taught a drama program together for more than 10 years, which includes biannual musical productions.
“Music is a big part of our lives and so is music appreciation. In our drama program, we use a lot of different types of music from the old to the new,” Carney said. “Our love for music is something that we hope to pass down to our students.”
“Congratulations to Carol and Marlene on a job well done. They are both extremely dedicated teachers and are so deserving of this win,” Principal Maloney said.
Those wishing to view the episode can do so on Hulu with a subscription to the streaming service. “Beat Shazam” airs Mondays 9-10 p.m. Eastern Time on FOX.
