Two killed, including officer, in Weymouth shooting
A Weymouth Police officer and a resident at her home were shot and killed Sunday morning.
According to officials, Weymouth Police Officer Micheal Chesna, 42, was killed today while on duty this morning. Chesna who was an Army veteran and 6 year member of the force, has left behind a wife and two children ages 4 and 9.
The incident began at approximately 7:00 a.m. this morning when there was a single car accident where a suspect left on foot. Chesna allegedly saw the suspect vandalize a home. Chesna got out of his car where the suspect, Emanuel Lopes, threw a large stone and struck Chesna in the head according to accounts. Lopes then grabbed Chesna’s gun and shot the officer multiple times in the chest and head. The incident occurred in the area of Burton Terrace in Weymouth.
After a pursuit, Lopes engaged in gunfire with officers. The gunfire fatally struck a female who was at her home. Lopes was later captured.
Lopes will be arraigned on two counts of homicide.
The investigation is ongoing.
