Two injured, one seriously, after Newport, Rhode Island highway collision

The Newport Police Department is investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Wednesday, at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Connell Highway in the area of the RK Town Center.
According to NPD, preliminary reports indicate that a 50-year-old woman from Middletown experienced what appears to be a medical emergency while driving, causing her vehicle to veer off the road and strike a 58-year-old Newport resident who was walking along the adjacent bike path.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene. The male pedestrian sustained significant injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for further treatment and is in serious condition. The female driver was also taken to Newport Hospital for medical evaluation and is in stable condition.
At this time, no charges are being filed against the driver as the circumstances of the accident are currently being investigated.
