What was believed to be just a regular crash, turned out to be much more on Tuesday.

At approximately 9:35 p.m., Trooper Paul Martin, assigned to State Police-Middleboro, responded to a two vehicle crash on Route 24 Southbound in Taunton. As he arrived on scene he confirmed there were no injuries and coordinated with other troopers to investigate.

The operator of a Nissan SUV involved in the crash, identified as Savon Gonsalves, 20, of Fall River, was displaying signs of impairment while speaking with troopers. It was also discovered that the Nissan made an unsafe lane change causing the crash. After an evaluation of Gonsalves, he was determined to be impaired and was placed under arrest.

While Trooper Matthew Ditata was speaking to a passenger in the Nissan, identified as Serena Silva, 19, of Brockton, he observed a firearm in a bag she just removed from the vehicle. Silva was immediately detained and troopers located a Glock 27 .40 Caliber handgun loaded with a round in the chamber. Troopers also located multiple knotted plastic baggies containing a substance believed to be Fentanyl along with $2,027 in cash. It was also discovered that Gonsalves had an active warrant for his arrest for violating his terms of probation from prior narcotics and firearms charges.

Silva and Gonsalves were transported to SP-Middleboro for booking. A bail commissioner was contacted and ordered Gonsalves to be held without bail. Silva had a bail amount of $2,500 set. They were transported to Taunton District Court this morning for their arraignment on the following charges.
