Two held without bail, one still wanted, in murder of 22-year-old Massachusetts man

BROCKTON – A second man has been held without bail after his arraignment for his role in connection with a shooting that left a man dead in Brockton, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz has announced. 

In Brockton District Court, 23-year-old Govanni Carapinha pleaded not guilty to one count each of Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, and Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling. Carapinha was held without bail. 

On Tuesday, Marcus Miranda, 20, was arraigned on the same charges in Brockton District Court. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was held without bail. The charges follow an investigation by Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police. On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at approximately 11:51 p.m., Brockton Police received 911 calls for a shooting that occurred on Vesey Street. Brockton Police responded to the scene and located a male victim who had been shot several times in the rear of the residence. Emergency medical personnel determined the man to be deceased. The victim was identified as 22-year-old Romualdy Pierre-Charles.

Brockton Police contacted Massachusetts State Police to begin the investigation.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reported that the cause of Pierre- Charles’s death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was homicide.

A review of surveillance video showed three individuals wearing black clothing approach the home on Vesey Street. Eleven projectiles were retrieved from the victim, and police located numerous shell casings at the scene.

During the shooting, Carapinha was wounded in the leg. Miranda and another unidentified male wearing black clothing, helped Carapinha into a gray Infiniti motor vehicle and drove him from the murder scene in Brockton to Boston Medical Center. Carapinha was seen on BMC surveillance video being wheelchaired into the hospital by Miranda and the unidentified third suspect. 

On Tuesday, Carapinha was released from BMC and he was held at Plymouth House of Corrections until his arraignment Friday. 

Both Miranda and Carapinha are next scheduled to appear in court on August 14th. 

The investigation is ongoing and active.
