Two from Massachusetts face several charges after injuring Rhode Island officer who fired gun

Two Massachusetts residents are facing charges after an incident where an officer was injured and fired a gun.

The Rhode Island State Police announced Thursday that on Tuesday, the United States Marshals Service, Massachusetts State Police (VFAS), and Boston Police, with the assistance of the Rhode Island State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force, and the Cranston Police Department, arrested 24-year-old Michael Campagna, age 24, of South Boston, Massachusetts, and 24-year-old Megan O’Brien of Lynn, Massachusetts. Both individuals were arrested at JFK train station in Boston, Massachusetts as fugitives wanted in Rhode Island on various charges relating to an incident where a Cranston Police Officer discharged their firearm.  

These arrests stem from an investigation of a reported shoplifting at the Garden City Shopping Center, Cranston Rhode Island on Sunday, where both Campagna and O’Brien fled in a gray Kia. Shortly after fleeing, a Cranston Police Officer observed the suspect gray Kia stopped in traffic on Reservoir Avenue near the onramp to Route 10 in the City of Providence. When the Cranston officer approached the suspect gray Kia, opened the driver’s door, and ordered the operator, identified as Campagna, to exit the vehicle, he sped away running over the officer’s foot. The Cranston Police officer then discharged their service weapon.   

Once extradited to Rhode Island, Michael Campagna and Megan O’Brien will face the following charges:

Campagna: Felony Assault and/or Battery, Assault on a Police Officer, Reckless Driving / Eluding Officer, Obstruction of an Officer in Execution of Duty, Resisting Arrest, and Conspiracy.

O’Brien: Felony Assault and/or Battery, Assault on a Police Officer, Aiding and Abetting (Assault on a Police Officer), Aiding and Abetting (Reckless Driving/ Eluding), and Conspiracy.

In addition to the above-referenced charges, the Cranston Police Department hold active arrest warrants for Megan O’Brien for felony shoplifting, and Michael Campagna for misdemeanor shoplifting.
