Two Fall River police officers injured after juvenile found with gun near school grounds
A teen has been arrested after an incident near a Fall River school.
According to Det. Sergeant Moses Pereira, on Wednesday, Officers assigned to the Special Operations Division were conducting proactive patrols around the Resiliency Preparatory Academy at 290 Rock Street based on information received that outside agitators had recently been observed on the school grounds.
At just before 11:00 a.m., School Resource Officers observed multiple juveniles with whom they are familiar. on the school grounds. They also were aware that at least one of them were not actively enrolled as a student at the Resiliency Preparatory Academy. Officers approached the juveniles and engaged them in conversation.
Police initially reported this took place on school grounds and issued a correction that it occurred across the street from the school, not on school grounds.
While speaking with the juveniles, it became apparent that one of them, who was not a student at the school, was behaving inconsistently with previous interactions. A pat frisk was conducted, and a loaded Cobra .380 firearm was recovered in his possession. At this time, the juvenile attempted to fight with the police to avoid being placed under arrest.
He would subsequently be taken into custody after a brief struggle. Two officers sustained minor injuries as a result of the struggle.
The 17-year-old is charged with carrying a loaded firearm in public without an LTC, possession of a firearm without an LTC, possession of ammunition, without an FID, and resisting arrest.
“Today’s arrest highlights the department’s commitment to maintaining safe neighborhoods throughout our community. I commend the men and women of the Special Operations Division, for being proactive in their approach and trusting their instincts as investigators.” – Chief Paul Gauvin
The arrest comes after a March fatal shooting near the school that claimed the life of a student.
