Two Fall River City Councilors object to second request to make Interim Police Chief Kelly Furtado permanent chief

A request to make Interim Police Chief Kelly Furtado chief was objected to at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
In a request made again by Mayor Paul Coogan, two objections were made by City Councilor Shawn Cadime and Cliff Ponte which moves the request to the next meeting in three weeks.
In a meeting that was contentious at times earlier this month, the Fall River City Council voted no to making Interim Police Chief Kelly Furtado the permanent chief and giving her the $215,000 contract which is less than comparable communities.
Councilors reiterated their previous stances that took place at the previous meeting with Ponte adding that the council couldn’t pass the request after voting 9-0 at the previous meeting to have a search committee to pick the permanent chief.
Cadime, Ponte, Dionne, Camara, and Pereira voted against on April 8th. Hart, Kilby, Raposo, and Sampson voted in favor.
With the objections, a full vote was not made at today’s meeting.
