Two Dighton police officers recognized for actions that saved man’s life
DIGHTON — Chief George Nichols is pleased to announce that two Dighton Police officers were honored by the Dighton Board of Selectmen on Wednesday night for saving a man’s life in March.
On March 9, Dighton Police Officers Kenneth Almeida and Aaron Swartz, along with members of the Dighton Fire Department, responded to the area of 890 Oak St. for the report of a man who was injured while cutting down a tree.
Officer Almeida was the first to arrive on the scene, where he observed a man suffering from injuries to his head and leg. A few minutes later, Officer Swartz arrived on scene. It became clear to the officers that this was a serious injury that needed to be treated immediately. Both officers worked to provide life-saving medical aid, which included the use of multiple tourniquets, to the victim until paramedics arrived.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital where his leg was later amputated.
On Wednesday, April 24, members of the Dighton Board of Selectmen presented Officers Almeida and Swartz with letters of commendation for their response to the incident and their efforts.
“On behalf of the Dighton Police Department, I would like to recognize Officers Kenneth Almeida and Aaron Swartz for their unwavering dedication to serving the residents of the Town of Dighton,” Chief Nichols said. “These officers relied on the training they have acquired throughout their years of service and their quick action helped to save this man’s life.”
The victim’s name was not released.
