Colonel James M. Manni, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, announces that members of the State Police Major Crimes Unit arrested a Tiverton Police Officer for falsely producing the signature of the Tiverton Town Treasurer.

On July 24, 2019, William R. Munroe, age 56, of 93 Keeley Street, Fall River, was arrested for thirty counts of Forgery.

On Tuesday, June 11, 2019, the Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit was assigned to investigate a forgery complaint that was filed by the Town of Tiverton. It was reported that in May 2019, the Tiverton Town Treasurer’s office had difficulty processing a Tiverton police officer’s payroll deduction for contribution to a 457(b) Public Employee Deferred Compensation (PEDC) plan.

The Tiverton Police Officer was identified as William R. Munroe.

The investigation allegedly revealed that a total of thirty-three (33) disbursement forms were submitted by Munroe during the time period of 2013 through 2019 displaying the Town Treasurer’s signature.

After thorough review, it was confirmed that the Treasurer’s office did not sign nor authorize a total of thirty disbursement forms submitted by Munroe. The total withdrawal amount from Munroe’s deferred compensation plan was fifty-three thousand nine hundred dollars.

Munroe was subsequently charged with thirty counts of Forgery. He was arraigned by a Justice of the Peace Michael Robinson and released on $10,000 Personal Recognizance. His next court date is August 13, 2019.

The penalty for a person convicted of Forgery shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than ten years, or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, or both.

Munroe was arrested in December on 14 counts of larceny by Rhode Island State Police for allegedly stealing gas from the Town of Tiverton.
