Local fire departments battled flames and temperatures on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Tiverton Fire Department, at just after 2:30 p.m., the Tiverton Fire Department was dispatched to 575 Nanaquaket Road for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from the attic and flames beginning to break through the roof of a large residential structure.

Due to the size of the building and the lack of fire hydrants in the area, this incident quickly escalated to a 2nd and then a 3rd alarm, for additional manpower and tankers to establish a water supply.

Firefighters worked diligently to contain this fire, with mutual aid companies providing assistance both on scene and station coverage.

The fire was brought under control within an hour despite freezing cold temperatures.

One firefighter was evaluated on scene for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal and the Tiverton Fire Prevention office.
